SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is about increasing the quality and quantity of web traffic. So that your website ranks as high as possible in the respective search results, take the time to internalize the “do’s” and “don’ts” of search engine optimization. SEO best practices are also subject to changing times – but there are also some unchangeable fundamentals.

A distinction is made between technical and content-related SEO measures – both are equally important. Startups, and small and medium-sized companies do not always have the budget to employ or consult expensive internal or external specialists, particularly in crisis times. This can make sense in principle, but there are a few things you can do yourself.

The prerequisite for setting up an SEO campaign at all is the integration of appropriate analytics tools into your website. You will only be able to use your website data to adapt your content to your visitors’ preferences on this basis if you use tools such as Google Analytics or Google Search Console.

The right keywords

Blog posts and articles should contain keywords and be designed to rank for them. However, it is not only important to define the main keyword: synonyms or meaningful keyword combinations should also be included. For example, if you want to set up an article on the subject of SEO, “Search Engine Optimization” would be synonyms, while “SEO Tips for Beginners” would be a search engine-relevant keyword combination.

It is also important that the keywords you choose also correlate with the interests of your core readership. Filling a topic just because the keyword has a high search volume is generally not wrong, but you should weigh up whether the topic also fits your page well in terms of content. In the case of particularly popular topics, it is also necessary to reconsider whether the competition from “mainstream” sites will be so great that a good search engine ranking is excluded from the outset.

Don’t be tempted by particularly popular keywords or keyword combinations: the trick is to strike the right balance between search volume and competition expectations. Keyword tools help on the one hand, and experience takes hold overtime on the other. Under certain circumstances, an article with a “smaller” keyword will ultimately bring more organic traffic because the topic is better suited to your target group and is clicked more often.

Brevity is the soul of wit
